I understand what deep grief feels like. When I lost my 15-year old daughter Zoi in early 2014, it felt like I was punched in the gut. The days and weeks that followed were some of the most difficult I've ever experienced in my life.  

My emotions pressed hard on me to a breaking point.  In fact, my emotions were all over the place. Maybe you're feeling some of these same things right now. 

Within days of laying Zoi to rest, everyone went back to their lives, and I was left feeling like I had to go it, alone. I didn't know what to do and where to go for help. My family and friends didn't know what to say either, except "I can't imagine" and "I'm so sorry." I know they were trying to help, but I was consumed with how hard this already was.

Grief Is A Literal Gut Punch 

I understand what deep grief feels like. When I lost my 15-year old daughter Zoi in early 2014, it felt like I was punched in the gut. The days and weeks that followed were some of the most difficult I've ever experienced in my life.

Survival At Best...Really?!

I appreciated their attempts to help, because they saw that me and my family were struggling. And, their presence was SUPER helpful during that time. I even had a friend that checked in on me daily. 

But, at the end of the day, they couldn't take this pain away. And they couldn't guide me. And so, I did what 94% of people do when they want answers to setbacks, I went online to search for ANY resources that could potentially help me.   

I was overwhelmed almost immediately by everything I was seeing. The resources I did find pretty much told me that the best that I could hope for is survival. Not only that, but TIME would also heal my wounds. Have you heard that one before? 

Wow... Really?!

I've never felt so disappointed and alone at the same time. This did not sit well with me...

The Push I Needed...

The only light in this darkness came in the form of Zoi's friends who not only reached out to me to ask how I was doing, but I did the same. This was a connection we sorely needed. 

And, when Zoi's friends came to me and asked  "What do we do with this?", The only thing I could think of saying to them was "We're not going to give up and we're going to find a way through this - TOGETHER."  

They pushed me to think differently about how we were going to get through this by asking really difficult questions and having a curiosity to figure it out. 

And so, one evening after a deep and cathartic conversation with one of Zoi's good friends, I sat down and started to write out my experiences, in real time of what my struggles through grief were,  what was working for me to take not just the first step, but then also the next, and the one after that, etc.  
These stories provided, guidance, context and relatability with Zoi's friends and others when they asked what I was doing to navigate this. And, pretty soon we found all started to find our footing. Zoi's friends were even telling me how much the tools helped them in certain situations that had nothing to do with their grief... that feedback helped me to keep going.

The Push I Needed...

When Zoi's friends came to me and asked  "What do we do with this?", I was lost for words. The only thing I could think of saying to them was "We're not going to give up and we're going to find a way through this - TOGETHER."  

They were MY Guide through this. They were the push I needed. 

And so, one evening after a deep and cathartic conversation with one of Zoi's good friends, I sat down and started to write out my experience of grief in the form of stories, what was working for me to take not just the first step, but then also the next, and the one after that, etc.  

I would share these "steps" with Zoi's friends and pretty soon we found our footing. They were even telling me how much the tools helped them in certain situations that had nothing to do with losing Zoi.
